Letters discussing Abraham Lincoln's involvement in William Kellogg's resolution before congress on extending slavery, February 1861. Includes letters from Paul Selby, Isaac N. Phillips, reporter of the Illinois Supreme Court and Lincoln biographer and Leonard F. Ross, a Colonel in the Civil War, involved in Democratic politics and son of the founder of Lewistown, Ill. Also a statement from A.M. Swan who had been a political writer for the Galesburg Free Democrat during the time of the Kellogg resolution. Also one letter from Roderic M. Cole regarding a daguerotype he took of Lincoln.

Leonard Fulton Ross (1823-1901), Union general. He raised the 17th Regiment of Illinois Infantry, and was commissioned Colonel in May of 1861, leading it in Kentucky and Missouri. He commanded 3rd Brigade, 1st Division of the Army of Tennessee. On Apr. 25, 1862, he was promoted Brigadier General of U.S Volunteers.
